Woman anaesthetised by hypnosis before surgery

A woman in Italy was successfully anaesthetised via hypnosis ahead of undergoing skin cancer surgery, in an operation hailed Thursday as a landmark by local media.

The procedure was performed in Padua by Enrico Ferro, Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the northern Italian town's university. It took 10 minutes to hypnotize the 42-year-old patient, while the surgery lasted 20 minutes.

"When the patient was de-hypnotised, she reported no pain and was discharged immediately," Ferro wrote in an article on Anaesthesia, a scientific journal.

"Our case confirms the efficacy of hypnosis and demonstrates that it may be valuable as a sole anaesthetic method in selected cases," the professor added.

Speaking on RAI radio, Ferro explained his method. "You concentrate (the patient's) attention on a single thing," so as to distract them from everything else, including pain, he said.

Hypnosis is unlikely to work on 10 to 15 per cent of the population, he indicated. A further 10 to 15 per cent is "highly" sensitive to it, while the rest of the population has "average" sensitivity.

The woman who was operated in Padua fell into the "average" category, Ferro said.

Worriers are more likely to develop anxiety due to lack of sleep. Hypnotherapy could help

The report explains how recent research has shown that natural worriers are more vulnerable to the negative effect of sleep loss.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), neuroscientists from the University of California, Berkeley, saw increased activity in the amygdala and insular cortex in healthy persons who were sleep deprived. The pattern they observed mirrors abnormal neural activity seen in anxiety disorders, the investigators note.

Furthermore, the report explains how those who are naturally more anxious, and therefore more likely to develop an anxiety disorder, are even more vulnerable to the affects of sleep loss.

The report also suggests that there may be a significant benefit for people with anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and post traumatic stress disorder, treating the insomnia by using hypnotherapy.

Paul White, Director of the Surrey Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy and former Chairman of the National Council for Hypnotherapy, said "If insomnia is a key factor in anxiety disorders, as this study suggests, then it's potentially treatable by using hypnotherapy for insomnia. Our hypnotherapy for insomnia treatment works to remove the underlying worries and anxieties that support insomnia. In doing so, we generally reduce the anxiety and restore good quality sleep, affectively treating the symptom and the cause at the same time."

The Surrey Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy believe that insomnia has a profound effect on the way people process and respond to events around them. There is, therefore, an obvious connection between sleep and mental health.

They find that by using hypnotherapy to combat insomnia they can help clients to change their inappropriate beliefs around the external events that cause and maintain the insomnia. This creates new, more appropriate behaviours around those external events. Thus changing the way they respond to similar situations in the future.

By helping their clients to be more relaxed and calmer in their day to day life, as well as being more effective at dealing with stressful events and situations, means that when it comes to bedtime their mind is calmer, aiding more restful sleep.

Clients that undergo hypnotherapy for insomnia find that they can, after just a few sessions, actually go to bed without the worrying thoughts and stress over going to sleep.

Because by replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, especially about sleep, clients begin to see changes with their sleeping habits and improvements in feelings of well being. When this happens, just about everything in their life improves because they can deal with day to day problems more effectively.

Can hypnotherapy help with absences in workplace?

According to The Telegraph in an article published on the 26 June 2013, anxiety and stress are the most popular reasons for missing time off work. An official major nationwide study looked at tens of thousands of sick notes issued by GP’s and found that 35 per cent were for reasons associated with mild to moderate mental health disorders. A spokesperson from the Department for Work and Pensions said:

“Sickness absence is a burden to business, to the taxpayer and to the thousands of people who end up trapped on benefits when they could actually work. Supporting people with mental health problems to return to work more quickly will be an important part of the new independent health and work advisory service.”

One way to help people deal with mild mental health disorders is by using complementary therapies such as hypnotherapy. The National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) gives members of the general public access to local hypnotherapist’s details from all over the UK which can be used to arrange hypnotism sessions. This can help a variety of issues including weight loss, phobias, habits like smoking and anxiety or stress. In this case, hypnotherapy could help the client reduce levels of anxiety and stress through discussing the issue and using hypnotic techniques to control and alleviate symptoms.

“This could help those who are absent from work due to anxiety and stress and reduce symptoms with the goal of returning the client back to the workplace ASAP,” added a spokesperson from the NCH.

The National Council for Hypnotherapy aims to highlight the variety of uses for hypnotherapy.

NCH represents over 1800 hypnotherapy professionals within the UK and is committed to ensuring the highest possible professional standards amongst our members. Those looking for help with smoking, weight, anxiety, panic attacks, habits and phobias may be helped by local NCH accredited therapists, look for the NCH seal of approval on their websites. As one of the largest registers of independent Hypnotherapists, the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) is actively involved with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and strives to develop standards for the benefit of the profession, now and into the future.

According to an article published on The Almagest, a clinical trial showed that hypnotherapy helped people with non cardiac chest pain. Around one in three of patients who require help for chest pain do not have any form of heart disease or any other identifiable chest pain and as result, finding treatment or a cure can be difficult.

The study looked at if patients with chest pain could be helped by hypnotherapy. The research consisted of 28 patients split into two groups. One received 12 sessions of hypnotherapy over 17 weeks, whilst the other group received a placebo and supportive therapy. Results showed that 83 per cent of those who had received hypnotherapy reported significant pain relief, as well as an improved sense of wellbeing and reduced use of painkillers. In comparison to those who had received a placebo and supportive therapy, 23 per cent reported improvement.

Further investigations showed that hypnotherapy had affected areas associated with emotional response to pain as well as acid levels produced in the stomach, both of which could be cited as reasons for non cardiac chest pain.

The news comes as a delight for hypnotherapist directory, The National Council for Hypnotherapy. The Council and its qualified and professional members have long been highlighting the various benefits of using hypnotherapy for a range of issues including habits, phobias and ailments. A spokesperson fromThe National Council for Hypnotherapy added:

“It is great to see some positive results received from using hypnotherapy in a clinical and independent trail. We hope it encourages other to try its hugely beneficial properties.”

Exploring the science of hypnosis

Are you hypnotizable? Chantell Williams, with National Geographic’s Youth Radio, recently sought that answer about herself and turned to Stanford’s David Spiegel, MD, for help.

A psychiatrist who uses hypnosis to treat patients for things like pain and phobias, Spiegel published an imaging study last year showing how the areas of the brain associated with executive control and attention tend to have less activity in people who can’t be put into a hypnotic trance compared to those who can be. This means, Spiegel told me then, that hypnotizability is “less about personality variables and more about cognitive style.”

Noting that hypnosis is “literally the oldest western conception of a psycho-therapy,” Spiegel discusses his work and the science behind the therapy in a podcast with Williams. As for whether Williams had success with self hypnosis, you’ll just have to listen.

Does hypnotherapy work? Science says "Yes"!

WASHINGTON- April 28, 2013- “Hypnosis seems helpful in treating addictions and the depression and anxiety associated with them”- Psychology Today

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy has been rooted in science with evidence based results reported for many years. Although the American Medical Association (AMA) currently has no clear position on the effectiveness of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, in 1958, the AMA reported hypnotherapy has a recognized place in the medical armamentarium and is a useful technique in the treatment of certain illnesses.

Hypnotherapy is considered an effective adjunct in psychotherapy for many issues, and more are being studied. On its own, hypnotherapy is reported to be beneficial: In 2001, the British Psychological Society commissioned a group of expert psychologists and published a report that declared hypnosis a proven therapeutic medium and valid for study.

The report went on to say hypnotherapy is beneficial for a wide range of issues encountered in medicine, psychology and psychiatry with regard to stress, anxiety, pain, and psychosomatic illnesses. Some illnesses described are insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches and migraines, asthma and a variety of skin maladies. Weight reduction was also cited as benefiting from hypnotherapy.

A comparison study reported in 2007 by American Health Magazine indicates some psychological issues benefit more from hypnotherapy than psychoanalysis and behavior therapy.  A German university meta-analysis of 444 studies supported this claim, concluding a 64 percent success rate with hypnotherapy for stress, anxiety and chronic pain.

According to Sanjay Paul, A psychology instructor at several universities, hypnosis is a heightened sense of suggestibility for accessing the subconscious mind which is responsible for up to 90 to 95 percent of our thoughts and actions. No one can be made to do anything they do not wish to under hypnosis. That old, inaccurate reputation stems from night club acts.

Paul goes on to say hypnosis can provide lasting change by “cleaning the bottom of the mental fish tank” and it is the sub-conscious that helps to maintain ones self-image and record all memory via sensor input as a 24 hour mental tape recorder.

Rosario Dawson converted to hypnotherapy after trying in Trance

3/20/2013

Rosario Dawson revealed tonight she is a convert to hypnotherapy after trying it for new film Trance.

The Sin City star looked entrancing on the red carpet in a glittering red gown by British designer Jenny Packham, at the premiere of Danny Boyle's new thriller in London's Leicester Square.

Dawson's co-stars Vincent Cassel and James McAvoy both claimed they had tried hypnosis as research for the film, but it hadn't worked.

And Boyle said he didn't even try it because "directors are control freaks and I don't think they ever relax enough to be a useful subject for a hypnotist".

But Dawson, who plays a hypnotherapist in the film, said: "I think it works actually, quite well. I didn't have anything like cigarettes to quit or anything like that.

"But I remember I went in and gave her an idea of what I wanted to work on in the session. And I laid down and she put a blanket over me because when you go into a trance state it's sort of like being in between sleep and awake, so your body thinks it's falling asleep. So I got cold and then I relaxed and I went along with her voice and it was really comforting. My body did those little spasms that it does when you're falling asleep.

"And then I woke up and she said 'I know you said you wanted to work on this, but you reacted to this, this and this.' And I was like, 'How can you know all that?!' And she said my foot was kicking when she asked me about a certain thing.

"So it's actually quite interesting that your conscience will reveal itself, and if you're trained to read that, people give a lot of tells. It's almost like poker. We think we're hiding things, but we're not.

"So it was really great for me to experience that, because the premise of the film is that hypnotherapy works on such a strong level.

"So it was really necessary for me to believe that, and having been through that I gained a lot of respect for the profession, I have to say."

McAvoy plays a fine art auctioneer who gets mixed up with a criminal gang, headed by Cassel's character, who join forces with a hypnotherapist played by Dawson to try to recover a lost painting.

Dawson and Boyle were rumoured to be dating after working on the film, and she was his guest at the Olympic Opening Ceremony. But it was revealed earlier this month that they have split.

Boyle insisted they all became friends off camera.

He said: "With a three-hander like this, casting was absolutely everything and we were lucky to be able to attract Vincent Cassel, James McAvoy and Rosario Dawson to play the three parts.

"And they were great friends off camera.

"On camera you get the natural competitive instinct of actors to say, 'This film is about me'. And they do battle in a way."
