Last year I was lucky to be able to help a journalist from the Birmingham Mail overcome her first time mother fears through some hypnotherapy techniques and a full article about has been published in the paper today (April 2nd, 2014).
Essentially I was able to conduct a series of hypnosis sessions with the lady from 31 weeks of pregnancy, concentrating on managing the fears in her head and minimising their impact so that she felt in control of what was happening. After all if the head is not prepared for birth, the body will not be either. In other words if you think about being tense, the birth canal will be tense.
One of the important techniques I was able to teach her was how to put herself in a state of relaxation so that in the delivery room, she would be able to cope with contractions. Because I was not intended to be present at the birth, I also gave the father some instruction in how to help the mother switch on the relaxation at the times she most needed it.
Birth it turns out is still a miracle and although the natural side of things had to be helped along in the end, my client felt calm enough at the time for much better birth experience.
